The journey from the bustling town of Pollachi to the misty heights of Valparai is one of the most iconic road trips in South India. Spanning roughly 64 kilometres, this route snakes its way up into the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, ascending through the protected evergreen canopy of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (formerly Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary).
Before global tea plantations transformed the landscape, this stunning mountain range was historically known as the Poonachi Hills.

Step 1: The Foothills & The Aliyar Dam (20 km from Pollachi)
As you leave Pollachi and approach the foothills of the Anamalai range, your first major stop is the picturesque Aliyar Dam and Park.
- The History: Constructed under the visionary leadership of former Chief Minister Shri K. Kamaraj, the Aliyar Dam project is a cornerstone of the region, providing vital drinking water to Pollachi and driving a major Tamil Nadu hydroelectricity plant.
- The Park & Cinema: Spanning nearly 2 acres, the beautifully manicured Aliyar Park sits right at the base of the reservoir. A favorite weekend getaway for families, this visual paradise has served as a background location for countless Kollywood movies. For a spectacular aerial photograph, view the park from the top edge of the dam structure!
- Aquaculture Center: Right opposite the park, the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department operates an advanced aquaculture farming center where you can see a diverse variety of regional fish species.

Step 2: The Aliyar Forest Checkpost & Eco Rules
Immediately after the dam, you will hit the official Forest Department Checkpost. Because you are entering a protected wildlife sanctuary, the guards enforce strict eco-conservation rules:
- Plastic Screening: Single-use plastic or polythene bags are strictly banned. You must declare all plastic items at the checkpost and ensure you bring them back down with you.
- Entry Regulations: Out-of-station tourists must register their vehicle details and pay a nominal entry fee. (Local Valparai residents are permitted to pass through seamlessly by showing their local ID cards).

Step 3: Monkey Falls (Just Past the Checkpost)
Your very first attraction once you clear the forest gates is the bubbling, natural cascade of Monkey Falls.
- Getting There: The falls sit just a short 100-metre walk away from the main highway edge. Keep an eye out for a quiet Ayyappan Temple resting nearby on the highway border.
- The Monkey Menace: As the name perfectly implies, this area is highly populated by wild bonnet macaques. Be incredibly careful with your belongings—do not carry open food packets, plastic covers, or bags, as the monkeys will snatch them straight out of your hands!
- Best Time to Visit: The monsoon month of August brings spectacular, roaring water volume to Monkey Falls. However, please exercise extreme caution, as the rushing currents can quickly become furious and dangerous for bathing during peak rain spells

Step 4: Braving the 40 Hairpin Bends to Valparai
From Monkey Falls, the real climbing adventure begins. The road carves through 40 legendary, thrilling hairpin bends. As you climb higher, pass the intermediate forest camp at Attakatti, and drive through places like Rottikadai and Iyerpadi, the temperature drops rapidly. The warm plains of Pollachi dissolve behind you into a refreshing world of rolling green tea estates and cool mountain breezes.
> ### 🐒 Monkey Falls Eco-Safety Note
> **Keep wildlife wild!** Feeding the macaques at Monkey Falls alters their natural behavior and leads to plastic ingestion.
> * **Hide Your Food:** Secure snacks and plastic covers inside zipped backpacks.
> * **No Littering:** Dispose of trash before passing the Aliyar checkpost to help the Forest Department protect the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.

> *Leave only footprints, take only memories.*
